Course outline

  1. ✦Introduction to coordination chemistry (electroneutrality principle, Kepert model, electron count, Werner’s coordination theory, isomerism) including theories of metal-ligand bonding (valence bond theory, crystal field theory and MO theory), metal-metal multiple bonding including quadruple (delta) bonding.

  2. ✦Classification of ligands by donor atoms, sigma-donor and pi-acceptor complexes. Oxidative addition and reductive elimination reactions and their significance in homogeneous catalysis.

  3. ✦Syntheses and characterization of various ligands and organometallic reagents. Reactivity of transition metal complexes.

  4. ✦General chemistry of lanthanides and actinides including nuclear reactions. Electronic spectroscopy (term symbols, microstates, L-S coupling, d-d transitions, Orgel and TS diagrams), magnetism. EPR.

  5. ✦Inorganic reaction mechanism: Substitution reactions in octahedral and square planar complexes, stereo chemistry of substitution reactions in octahedral complexes. Trans effect and the theories of trans effect. Redox reactions.
